Your Guide
Name: Lara ThomasonOur tour of Shetland’s south Mainland will take in scenic beaches, archaeology, wildlife, knitwear and local history.
Our first stop will be the beautiful beach of St Ninian’s which has the biggest sand tombolo in the UK. Here we will learn of hidden treasure dating back to the 12th century with a walk across to the island.
We will take in several sites of historic interest including views of Mousa Broch - the finest example of an Iron age broch in existence and a guided tour of Jarlshof, a fascinating prehistoric archaeological site featuring settlements from periods ranging from the Neolithic era to the 16th century.
Entry to Jarlshof site is payable by client, approx £7.00.
From there we will visit Sumburgh Head, with its dramatic high cliffs teeming with thousands of seabirds including the famous puffins (or “Tammie Nories” as we call them in Shetland). There will perhaps be sightings of orcas, dolphins or minke whales.
Heading back north, the tour stops off in Hoswick, a small village which boasts a lot to see: we’ll stop at the visitor centre and knitwear and learn about the local whaling history and knitwear, which is produced in the nearby factory.
We’ll then head back to Shetland’s main town, Lerwick, and spend a short time visiting the picturesque “Lodberries” including hidden smugglers tunnels, which date back to the 17th century and have their foundations built in the sea.
Tour consists of easy walking over short distances.
