Our tour of Shetland’s capital, Lerwick, leaves from Victoria Pier, in the town centre.
We will take in “old” Lerwick and visit the picturesque Lodberries of south Commercial street. The word “lodberry” comes from Old Norse, and means a place where a boat could be tied up for loading and unloading. These buildings, which have their foundations built into the sea, date from the 17th century.
From there we will explore the lanes: within a designated conservation area, Lerwick’s lanes run from the harbour up a steep hill, between tightly packed 19th century houses and buildings. We’ll see beautiful townhouses, churches and a 17th century fort with spectacular views.
After this we’ll hop on board a minibus to visit Clickimin broch, which is just a short drive away. This Iron age broch, dating back 2800 years ago is one of the best preserved broch sites in Shetland, and is situated on the edge of a loch. It is well worth a visit.
The tour will then take you into the town, to enjoy Lerwick’s many knitwear shops, and to the award-winning Shetland Museum, which has many fascinating displays and a wealth of information on Shetland’s rich heritage and culture.
Tour consists of easy walking over short distances.
